[78] And further, venerable sir, this too is unsurpassed: the way the Blessed One teaches the Dhamma concerning the ways of revealing (ādesanavidhā) [another's mind]. Venerable sir, there are these four ways of revealing.
Here, venerable sir, someone reveals by means of a sign (nimitta): 'Thus is your mind; such is your mind; so is your mind (citta).' And even if he reveals much, it is exactly so and not otherwise. This is the first way of revealing.
And again, venerable sir, here someone does not reveal by means of a sign, but rather reveals after hearing a sound from humans, or non-humans, or deities: 'Thus is your mind; such is your mind; so is your mind.' And even if he reveals much, it is exactly so and not otherwise. This is the second way of revealing.
And again, venerable sir, here someone does not reveal by means of a sign, nor does he reveal after hearing a sound from humans, or non-humans, or deities, but rather he reveals after hearing the sound of the diffusion of thought of one who is thinking and examining: 'Thus is your mind; such is your mind; so is your mind.' And even if he reveals much, it is exactly so and not otherwise. This is the third way of revealing.
And again, venerable sir, here someone does not reveal by means of a sign, nor does he reveal after hearing a sound from humans, or non-humans, or deities, nor does he reveal after hearing the sound of the diffusion of thought of one who is thinking and examining; but rather, having encompassed with his own mind the mind of one who has attained a concentration (samādhi) accompanied by thought (vitakka) and examination (vicāra), he understands: 'According to the way the mental formations (manosaṅkhāra) of this venerable one are directed, immediately after this state of mind he will think such-and-such a thought.' And even if he reveals much, it is exactly so and not otherwise. This, venerable sir, is the fourth way of revealing.
This, venerable sir, is what is unsurpassed concerning the ways of revealing.
