[168] Sāriputta, there are these eight assemblies. What eight? The assembly of khattiyas, the assembly of brahmins, the assembly of householders, the assembly of ascetics, the assembly of the Cātumahārājika gods, the assembly of the Tāvatiṃsa gods, the assembly of Māras, and the assembly of Brahmās. These, Sāriputta, are the eight assemblies. Possessing these four grounds of self-confidence (vesārajja), Sāriputta, the Tathāgata approaches and enters right into these eight assemblies.
I recall (abhijānāmi), Sāriputta, having approached many hundreds of assemblies of khattiyas. There too I have formerly sat with them, formerly conversed with them, and formerly engaged in discussion with them. I see no ground, Sāriputta, on which fear or timidity might come upon me there. Not seeing any such ground, Sāriputta, I dwell … . I recall, Sāriputta, having approached many hundreds of assemblies of brahmins, assemblies of householders, assemblies of ascetics, assemblies of the Cātumahārājika gods, assemblies of the Tāvatiṃsa gods, assemblies of Māras, and assemblies of Brahmās. Sāriputta, when anyone says of me — who knows thus and sees thus — 'The ascetic Gotama has no superhuman distinction in knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision adequate to the noble ones; the ascetic Gotama teaches a Dhamma hammered out by reasoning, following his own line of inquiry, as it occurs to him' — then, Sāriputta, unless he abandons that speech, abandons that thought, and relinquishes that view, he will be deposited in hell just as if carried and placed there. Just as, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu accomplished in virtue, accomplished in concentration (samādhi), and accomplished in wisdom would attain final knowledge (aññā) in this very life, even so, Sāriputta, I declare this to be the outcome: unless he abandons that speech, abandons that thought, and relinquishes that view, he will be deposited in hell just as if carried and placed there.
