[169] "Sāriputta, there are these four modes of generation (yoni). What four? Generation from an egg (aṇḍajā yoni), generation from a womb (jalābujā yoni), generation from moisture (saṃsedajā yoni), and spontaneous generation (opapātikā yoni). And what, Sāriputta, is generation from an egg? Those beings, Sāriputta, who are born by breaking through the shell of an egg — this, Sāriputta, is called generation from an egg. And what, Sāriputta, is generation from a womb? Those beings, Sāriputta, who are born by breaking through the membrane-sac of the womb (vatthikosa) — this, Sāriputta, is called generation from a womb. And what, Sāriputta, is generation from moisture? Those beings, Sāriputta, who are born in rotten fish, in a rotting corpse, in rotten porridge, in a cesspool, or in a sewer — this, Sāriputta, is called generation from moisture. And what, Sāriputta, is spontaneous generation? Gods, hell-beings, certain human beings, and certain beings in the states of deprivation (vinipātikā) — this, Sāriputta, is called spontaneous generation. These, Sāriputta, are the four modes of generation.
Sāriputta, whoever should speak thus of me, who knows thus and sees thus: 'The ascetic Gotama has no superhuman distinction in knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision worthy of the noble ones; the ascetic Gotama teaches a Dhamma hammered out by reasoning, following his own line of inquiry, as it occurs to him' — unless he abandons that speech, abandons that mind (citta), and relinquishes that view, then, just as if he were carried off and placed there, so he is deposited in hell. Just as, Sāriputta, a bhikkhu accomplished in virtue, accomplished in concentration (samādhi), and accomplished in wisdom would attain final knowledge (aññā) in this very life, even so is the result in this case, I say: unless he abandons that speech, abandons that mind, and relinquishes that view, then, just as if he were carried off and placed there, so he is deposited in hell."
