[17] "Bhikkhus, and which are the taints (āsava) that should be abandoned by dispelling? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, reflecting wisely, does not tolerate an arisen thought of sensual desire; he abandons it, dispels it, terminates it, and brings it to non-existence. An arisen thought of ill will … an arisen thought of cruelty … he does not tolerate arisen evil, unwholesome states; he abandons them, dispels them, terminates them, and brings them to non-existence. Bhikkhus, whereas taints, vexatious and feverish, might arise in one who does not dispel these things, for one who dispels them those taints, vexatious and feverish, do not occur. These, bhikkhus, are called the taints that should be abandoned by dispelling."
