[18] Bhikkhus, and which are the taints (āsava) to be abandoned by development? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, reflecting wisely, develops the mindfulness factor of awakening (satisambojjhaṅga), which relies on seclusion (viveka), relies on dispassion (virāga), relies on cessation, and ripens in relinquishment (vossagga); reflecting wisely, he develops the investigation-of-dhammas factor of awakening … develops the energy factor of awakening … develops the rapture factor of awakening … develops the tranquility factor of awakening … develops the concentration (samādhi) factor of awakening … develops the equanimity factor of awakening, which relies on seclusion, relies on dispassion, relies on cessation, and ripens in relinquishment. For, bhikkhus, the distressing and feverish taints that might arise in one who does not develop these do not come to be for one who develops them thus. These, bhikkhus, are called the taints to be abandoned by development.
