[19] Bhikkhus, when for a bhikkhu those taints (āsava) that are to be abandoned by seeing have been abandoned by seeing; when those taints that are to be abandoned by restraint have been abandoned by restraint; when those taints that are to be abandoned by using have been abandoned by using; when those taints that are to be abandoned by enduring have been abandoned by enduring; when those taints that are to be abandoned by avoiding have been abandoned by avoiding; when those taints that are to be abandoned by dispelling have been abandoned by dispelling; when those taints that are to be abandoned by developing have been abandoned by developing — this, bhikkhus, is called a bhikkhu who dwells restrained with the restraint of all the taints: he has cut off craving (taṇhā), has rolled back the fetters, and by rightly breaking through conceit has made an end of suffering (dukkha).
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Gladdened, those bhikkhus delighted in the Blessed One's words.
