[179] Sāriputta, of those [four], this was my practice of rough living (lūkha). Dust and dirt (rajojalla), accumulated over many years, built up on my body until it formed a crust. Just as a tiṇḍuka stump, accumulating [bark] over many years, develops a crust, even so, Sāriputta, dust and dirt, accumulated over many years, built up on my body until it formed a crust. And it did not occur to me, Sāriputta: 'Oh, would that I might rub off this dust and dirt with my hand! Or that others might rub off this dust and dirt with their hands!' — even this, Sāriputta, did not occur to me. Such, Sāriputta, was my practice of rough living.
