[233] He develops the basis of spiritual power (iddhipāda) possessed of concentration (samādhi) due to desire and the volitional formations of striving; he develops the basis of spiritual power possessed of concentration due to energy, concentration due to mind (citta), and concentration due to investigation, each with the volitional formations of striving; and sheer vigor (ussoḷhi) is the fifth. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu thus possessed of the fifteen factors including vigor is capable of breaking out (abhinibbhidā), capable of full awakening (sambodhi), capable of attaining the unsurpassed security from bondage (yogakkhema).
Suppose, bhikkhus, there were a hen's eggs — eight, ten, or twelve — and the hen had properly sat upon them, properly warmed them, properly incubated them. Even though no such wish might arise in that hen: "Oh, that these chicks of mine might pierce the eggshell with the tips of their claws or with their beaks and break out safely!" — still those chicks are capable of piercing the eggshell with the tips of their claws or with their beaks and breaking out safely. Just so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu thus possessed of the fifteen factors including vigor is capable of breaking out, capable of full awakening, capable of attaining the unsurpassed security from bondage.
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Satisfied, those bhikkhus rejoiced in the Blessed One's words.
