[232] And which five bonds of the mind (cetaso vinibandhā) are thoroughly severed by him? Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu is devoid of lust for sensual pleasures, devoid of desire, devoid of affection, devoid of thirst, devoid of fever, devoid of craving (taṇhā). Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu is devoid of lust for sensual pleasures, devoid of desire, devoid of affection, devoid of thirst, devoid of fever, devoid of craving, his mind (citta) inclines to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving. In whomever the mind inclines to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving, thus is this first bond of the mind thoroughly severed by him.
Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is devoid of lust for the body … is devoid of lust for form … Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu does not, having eaten as much as he wishes, filling his belly, dwell devoted to the pleasure of lying down, the pleasure of reclining, the pleasure of drowsiness. Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu does not, having eaten as much as he wishes, filling his belly, dwell devoted to the pleasure of lying down, the pleasure of reclining, the pleasure of drowsiness, his mind inclines to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving. In whomever the mind inclines to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving, thus is this fourth bond of the mind thoroughly severed by him.
Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu will not lead the holy life (brahmacariya) aspiring to some order of gods, thinking: 'By this virtue, or by this observance, or by this austerity, or by this holy life, I shall become a god or a certain one among the gods.' Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu will not lead the holy life aspiring to some order of gods, thinking: 'By this virtue, or by this observance, or by this austerity, or by this holy life, I shall become a god or a certain one among the gods,' his mind inclines to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving. In whomever the mind inclines to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving, thus is this fifth bond of the mind thoroughly severed by him. These five bonds of the mind are thoroughly severed by him.
Bhikkhus, in whatever bhikkhu these five barrennesses of mind (cetokhilā) have been abandoned and these five bonds of the mind have been thoroughly severed — that he will indeed attain growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline: this is possible.
