[287] "Therefore, bhikkhus, even if others should abuse, revile, provoke, harass, or assail you, you should not on that account harbor resentment, displeasure, or dissatisfaction of mind toward them. Therefore, bhikkhus, even if others should honor, respect, esteem, or venerate you, you should not on that account entertain delight, gladness, or elation of mind. Therefore, bhikkhus, even if others honor, respect, esteem, or venerate you, you should think thus: 'It is with regard to what was formerly fully understood that such services are done for us.'
"Therefore, bhikkhus, whatever is not yours, abandon it; when you have abandoned it, that will be for your welfare and happiness for a long time. And what, bhikkhus, is not yours? Form (rūpa), bhikkhus, is not yours: abandon it; when you have abandoned it, that will be for your welfare and happiness for a long time. Feeling (vedanā), bhikkhus, is not yours: abandon it; when you have abandoned it, that will be for your welfare and happiness for a long time. Perception (saññā), bhikkhus, is not yours: abandon it; when you have abandoned it, that will be for your welfare and happiness for a long time. Volitional formations (saṅkhārā), bhikkhus, are not yours: abandon them; when you have abandoned them, they will be for your welfare and happiness for a long time. Consciousness (viññāṇa), bhikkhus, is not yours: abandon it; when you have abandoned it, that will be for your welfare and happiness for a long time.
"What do you think, bhikkhus? If people were to carry off the grass, sticks, branches, and leaves in this Jeta's Grove, or burn them, or do with them as they wished, would it occur to you: 'People are carrying us off, or burning us, or doing with us as they wish'?"
"No indeed, venerable sir. Why is that? Because, venerable sir, that is neither our self nor what belongs to our self."
"Even so, bhikkhus, whatever is not yours, abandon it; when you have abandoned it, that will be for your welfare and happiness for a long time. And what, bhikkhus, is not yours? Form, bhikkhus, is not yours: abandon it; when you have abandoned it, that will be for your welfare and happiness for a long time. Feeling, bhikkhus … Perception, bhikkhus … Volitional formations, bhikkhus … Consciousness, bhikkhus, is not yours: abandon it; when you have abandoned it, that will be for your welfare and happiness for a long time."
