[288] "Bhikkhus, thus the Dhamma has been well proclaimed by me — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork (chinnapiḷotika). In the Dhamma thus well proclaimed by me, bhikkhus — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork — those bhikkhus who are arahants, whose taints (āsava) are destroyed, who have lived the life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached their own goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, and are liberated through final knowledge — for them there is no round of existence whereby they might be described.
Bhikkhus, thus the Dhamma has been well proclaimed by me — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork. In the Dhamma thus well proclaimed by me, bhikkhus — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork — those bhikkhus who have abandoned the five lower fetters are all of spontaneous rebirth (opapātika), attaining final Nibbāna there, not subject to returning from that world.
Bhikkhus, thus the Dhamma has been well proclaimed by me — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork. In the Dhamma thus well proclaimed by me, bhikkhus — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork — those bhikkhus who have abandoned three fetters, and in whom lust (rāga), hatred, and delusion are attenuated, are all once-returners (sakadāgāmī); having come back to this world only once, they will make an end of suffering (dukkha).
Bhikkhus, thus the Dhamma has been well proclaimed by me — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork. In the Dhamma thus well proclaimed by me, bhikkhus — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork — those bhikkhus who have abandoned three fetters are all stream-enterers (sotāpanna), no longer subject to the states of loss, fixed in destiny, with awakening as their destination.
Bhikkhus, thus the Dhamma has been well proclaimed by me — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork. In the Dhamma thus well proclaimed by me, bhikkhus — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork — those bhikkhus who are Dhamma-followers (dhammānusārī) or faith-followers (saddhānusārī) all have awakening as their destination.
Bhikkhus, thus the Dhamma has been well proclaimed by me — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork. In the Dhamma thus well proclaimed by me, bhikkhus — plain, open, evident, stripped of patchwork — those in whom there is mere faith in me, mere love for me, are all bound for heaven."
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Elated, those bhikkhus delighted in the Blessed One's words.
The Alagaddūpama Sutta, the second, is concluded.
