[292] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Veḷuvana, the Squirrels' Feeding Ground (Kalandakanivāpa). Then a number of bhikkhus (bhikkhu) of the native land (jātibhūmi), having completed the rains residence in the native land, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down to one side. When those bhikkhus were seated to one side, the Blessed One said this to them:
"Bhikkhus, who in the native land is esteemed thus by the bhikkhus of the native land, his companions in the holy life (sabrahmacārī): 'Being himself of few wishes, he gives talk to the bhikkhus on fewness of wishes; being himself contented, he gives talk to the bhikkhus on contentment; being himself secluded, he gives talk to the bhikkhus on seclusion; being himself unentangled, he gives talk to the bhikkhus on non-entanglement; being himself of aroused energy (vīriya), he gives talk to the bhikkhus on the arousing of energy; being himself accomplished in virtue (sīla), he gives talk to the bhikkhus on accomplishment in virtue; being himself accomplished in concentration (samādhi), he gives talk to the bhikkhus on accomplishment in concentration; being himself accomplished in wisdom (paññā), he gives talk to the bhikkhus on accomplishment in wisdom; being himself accomplished in liberation (vimutti), he gives talk to the bhikkhus on accomplishment in liberation; being himself accomplished in the knowledge and vision of liberation (vimuttiñāṇadassana), he gives talk to the bhikkhus on accomplishment in the knowledge and vision of liberation — an adviser, an instructor, one who explains, exhorts, inspires, and gladdens his companions in the holy life'?"
"Venerable sir, it is the Venerable Puṇṇa Mantāṇiputta who in the native land is esteemed thus by the bhikkhus of the native land, his companions in the holy life: 'Being himself of few wishes, he gives talk to the bhikkhus on fewness of wishes; being himself contented … being himself secluded … being himself unentangled … being himself of aroused energy … being himself accomplished in virtue … being himself accomplished in concentration … being himself accomplished in wisdom … being himself accomplished in liberation … being himself accomplished in the knowledge and vision of liberation, he gives talk to the bhikkhus on accomplishment in the knowledge and vision of liberation — an adviser, an instructor, one who explains, exhorts, inspires, and gladdens his companions in the holy life.'"
