[301] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus." "Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:
"Bhikkhus, a sower (nevāpika) does not sow seed (nivāpa) for herds of deer with this thought: 'May the herds of deer, enjoying this seed I have sown, be long-lived and beautiful, and may they endure for a long time.' Rather, bhikkhus, a sower sows seed for herds of deer with this thought: 'The herds of deer, encroaching upon this seed I have sown, will eat the food infatuated; having encroached and eating the food infatuated, they will become intoxicated; being intoxicated, they will become negligent; being negligent, they will become such as I may do with as I wish amidst this seed.'"
