[306] Bhikkhus, this simile has been made by me in order to convey a meaning. And this is the meaning here: 'The sown bait (nivāpa),' bhikkhus, is a designation for the five cords of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇā). 'The sower (nevāpika),' bhikkhus, is a designation for Māra the Evil One. 'The sower's company,' bhikkhus, is a designation for Māra's assembly. 'The deer,' bhikkhus, is a designation for ascetics and brahmins.
