[307] Bhikkhus, therein, the first group of ascetics and brahmins, encroaching upon that seed (nivāpa) sown by Māra and upon those worldly baits (lokāmisa), ate the food infatuated. Eating the food there, having encroached, infatuated, they fell into intoxication; being intoxicated, they fell into negligence; being negligent, they became such as could be done with as one pleased by Māra amid that seed and those worldly baits. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, those first ascetics and brahmins did not get free from Māra's power and might. Bhikkhus, I declare these first ascetics and brahmins to be comparable to those first deer.
