[312] Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Then, in the morning, the Blessed One dressed and, taking bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms.
Then several bhikkhus approached the Venerable Ānanda; having approached, they said this to the Venerable Ānanda: "Friend Ānanda, it has been long since we heard a Dhamma talk in the Blessed One's presence. It would be good, friend Ānanda, if we might get to hear a Dhamma talk in the Blessed One's presence."
"Then, venerable ones, go to the hermitage of the brahmin Rammaka; perhaps you may get to hear a Dhamma talk in the Blessed One's presence."
"So be it, friend," those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Ānanda.
Then the Blessed One, having walked for alms in Sāvatthī, when he had returned from the almsround after the meal, addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Come, Ānanda, let us go to the Eastern Park, the mansion of Migāra's mother, for the day's abiding." "So be it, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, together with the Venerable Ānanda, went to the Eastern Park, the mansion of Migāra's mother, for the day's abiding.
Then in the evening, the Blessed One, having emerged from seclusion, addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Come, Ānanda, let us go to the Pubbakoṭṭhaka (the eastern bathing place) to bathe our limbs." "So be it, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, together with the Venerable Ānanda, went to the Pubbakoṭṭhaka to bathe his limbs. Having bathed his limbs at the Pubbakoṭṭhaka and come up out of the water, he stood in a single robe, drying his limbs.
Then the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, this hermitage of the brahmin Rammaka is not far off; delightful, venerable sir, is the hermitage of the brahmin Rammaka; inspiring, venerable sir, is the hermitage of the brahmin Rammaka. It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would go to the hermitage of the brahmin Rammaka, out of compassion." The Blessed One consented by silence.
Then the Blessed One went to the hermitage of the brahmin Rammaka. Now at that time several bhikkhus were seated together in the hermitage of the brahmin Rammaka engaged in Dhamma talk. The Blessed One stood outside at the gateway, waiting for the talk to come to a conclusion.
