[340] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. There the venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: "Friends, bhikkhus!" "Friend," those bhikkhus replied to the venerable Sāriputta.
The venerable Sāriputta said this: "Friends, just as the footprints of whatever creatures walk upon the land all come together within the footprint of the elephant, and the elephant's footprint is declared the foremost of them, namely by reason of its great size—even so, friends, whatever wholesome dhammas there are, all of them are included within the four noble truths (ariyasacca). Within which four? Within the noble truth of suffering (dukkha), within the noble truth of the origin (samudaya) of suffering, within the noble truth of the cessation (nirodha) of suffering, and within the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering."
