[341] "And what, friends, is the noble truth of suffering (dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ)? Birth (jāti) is suffering, aging is also suffering, death is also suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair are also suffering; not to obtain what one wants — that too is suffering. In brief, the five aggregates subject to clinging (pañcupādānakkhandhā) are suffering. And what, friends, are the five aggregates subject to clinging? They are as follows: the form (rūpa) aggregate subject to clinging, the feeling (vedanā) aggregate subject to clinging, the perception (saññā) aggregate subject to clinging, the volitional-formations (saṅkhārā) aggregate subject to clinging, and the consciousness (viññāṇa) aggregate subject to clinging. And what, friends, is the form aggregate subject to clinging? The four great elements (mahābhūta) and the form derived from the four great elements. And what, friends, are the four great elements? The earth element (pathavīdhātu), the water element (āpodhātu), the fire element (tejodhātu), and the air element (vāyodhātu)."
