[353] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Then the brahmin Piṅgalakoccha approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the brahmin Piṅgalakoccha said this to the Blessed One: "Sir Gotama, those ascetics and brahmins who have orders and followings, who are teachers of followings, well known and famous, founders of sects, esteemed as good by many people — namely, Pūraṇa Kassapa, Makkhali Gosāla, Ajita Kesakambala, Pakudha Kaccāyana, Sañjaya Belaṭṭhaputta, and the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta — have all of them directly known in accordance with their own claims, or have none of them directly known, or have some directly known and some not directly known?"
"Enough, brahmin, let that be: 'have all of them directly known in accordance with their own claims, or have none of them directly known, or have some directly known and some not directly known?' I will teach you the Dhamma, brahmin. Listen to it and attend well; I will speak."
"Yes, sir," the brahmin Piṅgalakoccha replied to the Blessed One.
