[375] Then the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said this to the Venerable Sāriputta: "Friend Sāriputta, we have all answered, each according to his own inspiration. Now on that point we ask the Venerable Sāriputta: Friend Sāriputta, delightful is the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood, the night is moonlit, the sal trees are in blossom throughout; heavenly fragrances, one would think, waft about. Friend Sāriputta, by what kind of bhikkhu would the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood be graced?"
"Here, friend Moggallāna, a bhikkhu wields mastery over the mind (citta), and the bhikkhu does not proceed under the mastery of the mind. In whatever meditative dwelling-attainment (vihārasamāpatti) he wishes to dwell in the morning, in that meditative dwelling-attainment he dwells in the morning; in whatever meditative dwelling-attainment he wishes to dwell at midday, in that meditative dwelling-attainment he dwells at midday; in whatever meditative dwelling-attainment he wishes to dwell in the evening, in that meditative dwelling-attainment he dwells in the evening. Just as, friend Moggallāna, a king or a king's chief minister might have a clothes-chest full of variously dyed garments: whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on in the morning, that very pair of garments he would put on in the morning; whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on at midday, that very pair of garments he would put on at midday; whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on in the evening, that very pair of garments he would put on in the evening — even so, friend Moggallāna, a bhikkhu wields mastery over the mind, and the bhikkhu does not proceed under the mastery of the mind. In whatever meditative dwelling-attainment he wishes to dwell in the morning, in that meditative dwelling-attainment he dwells in the morning; in whatever meditative dwelling-attainment he wishes to dwell at midday, in that meditative dwelling-attainment he dwells at midday; in whatever meditative dwelling-attainment he wishes to dwell in the evening, in that meditative dwelling-attainment he dwells in the evening. By such a kind of bhikkhu, friend Moggallāna, would the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood be graced."
