[38] Brahmin, this thought occurred to me: 'Whatever ascetics or brahmins who exalt themselves and disparage others (attukkaṃsakā paravambhī) resort to remote lodgings in the wilderness and forest thickets — because of the defect of self-exaltation and disparagement of others, those honorable ascetics and brahmins surely summon up unwholesome fear and dread. But I do not resort to remote lodgings in the wilderness and forest thickets exalting myself and disparaging others; I am one who neither exalts himself nor disparages others. Those noble ones who, not exalting themselves and not disparaging others, resort to remote lodgings in the wilderness and forest thickets — of those I am one.' Seeing in myself, brahmin, this absence of self-exaltation and of disparagement of others, I attained still greater assurance for dwelling in the forest.
