[37] Brahmin, this thought occurred to me: 'Whatever ascetics or brahmins there are who, uncertain (kaṅkhī) and doubting (vicikicchī), resort to remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest — those worthy ascetics and brahmins, because of the fault of their uncertainty and doubt (vicikicchā), summon up unwholesome fear and dread. But I do not resort to remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest uncertain and doubting: I am one who has crossed beyond doubt. I am one of those noble ones who, having crossed beyond doubt, resort to remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.' Brahmin, seeing in myself this state of having crossed beyond doubt, I gained even greater assurance (pallomam āpādiṃ) for dwelling in the forest.
