[386] Bhikkhus, a cowherd (gopālaka) possessed of eleven factors is capable of maintaining a herd of cattle and making it prosper. What eleven? Here, bhikkhus, a cowherd knows form (rūpaññū), is skilled in characteristics (lakkhaṇakusala), is one who picks out flies' eggs (āsāṭikā), is one who covers up wounds, is one who makes smoke, knows the ford, knows what has been drunk (pītaṃ jānāti), knows the road, is skilled in pastures (gocarakusala), is one who milks leaving a remainder, and is one who honors with exceptional veneration those bulls that are fathers of the herd, leaders of the herd. Possessed of these eleven factors, bhikkhus, a cowherd is capable of maintaining a herd of cattle and making it prosper.
In the same way, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of eleven qualities is capable of attaining growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya). What eleven? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu knows form, is skilled in characteristics, is one who picks out flies' eggs, is one who covers up wounds, is one who makes smoke, knows the ford, knows what has been drunk, knows the road, is skilled in pastures, is one who milks leaving a remainder, and is one who honors with exceptional veneration those bhikkhus who are elders, of long standing (rattaññū), long gone forth, fathers of the Saṅgha, leaders of the Saṅgha.
