[393] Then in the morning, the Venerable Assaji, having dressed, taking his bowl and robe, entered Vesālī for alms. Saccaka the Nigaṇṭha's son, while walking and wandering about Vesālī to stretch his legs, saw the Venerable Assaji coming from afar. Having seen him, he approached the Venerable Assaji; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Assaji, and when the courteous talk worthy of remembrance was concluded, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, Saccaka the Nigaṇṭha's son said this to the Venerable Assaji: "Good Assaji, how does the ascetic Gotama train his disciples? And in what manner does the instruction of the ascetic Gotama to his disciples mostly proceed?" "Aggivessana, the Blessed One trains his disciples thus, and in this manner the Blessed One's instruction to his disciples mostly proceeds: 'Bhikkhus, form (rūpa) is impermanent (anicca), feeling (vedanā) is impermanent, perception (saññā) is impermanent, volitional formations (saṅkhārā) are impermanent, consciousness (viññāṇa) is impermanent; form is not-self (anattā), feeling is not-self, perception is not-self, volitional formations are not-self, consciousness is not-self; all formations are not-self; all dhammas are not-self.' Thus, Aggivessana, does the Blessed One train his disciples, and in this manner the Blessed One's instruction to his disciples mostly proceeds." "Ill-heard indeed, good Assaji, is what we have heard, in that we have heard that the ascetic Gotama holds such a doctrine. Perhaps at some time or other we might come to a meeting with that good Gotama; perhaps there might be some conversation; perhaps we might free him from that evil view."
