[426] Then, Aggivessana, this occurred to me: 'It is not easy to attain that pleasure with a body that has reached such extreme emaciation. Suppose I were to eat coarse food—boiled rice and sour porridge (kummāsa).' So, Aggivessana, I ate coarse food—boiled rice and sour porridge. Now at that time, Aggivessana, the five bhikkhus were attending upon me, thinking: 'Whatever Dhamma the ascetic Gotama attains, that he will declare to us.' But when I ate coarse food—boiled rice and sour porridge—those five bhikkhus, disillusioned, departed from me, thinking: 'The ascetic Gotama has become given to abundance; he has strayed from the striving and reverted to abundance.'
