[460] Bhikkhus, what, then, are the things (dhammā) that make one an ascetic and that make one a brahmin? Thus, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves: "We shall be endowed with conscience (hiri) and fear of wrongdoing (ottappa)."
Now, bhikkhus, it may occur to you: "We are endowed with conscience and fear of wrongdoing; this much is enough, this much has been done; the goal of asceticism (sāmaññattha) has been attained by us; there is nothing whatever further to be done" — and you might come to contentment with just that much. I inform you, bhikkhus, I declare to you, bhikkhus: while there is still more to be done, let not the goal of asceticism of you who seek the goal of asceticism decline.
