[464] And what more, bhikkhus, is there to be done? You should train thus: "Our livelihood shall be purified, clear, open, unbroken, and restrained; and on account of that purified livelihood we shall neither exalt ourselves nor disparage others." It may be, bhikkhus, that this thought occurs to you: "We are endowed with conscience and moral dread (hiri-ottappa); our bodily conduct is purified, our verbal conduct is purified, our mental conduct is purified, our livelihood is purified. This much is enough, this much has been done; the goal of the ascetic life (sāmaññattha) has been attained by us; there is nothing more for us to do"—and with just that much you might come to contentment. I inform you, bhikkhus, I declare to you, bhikkhus: you who seek the goal of the ascetic life, do not let the goal of the ascetic life decline while there is still more to be done.
