[463] Bhikkhus, and what more is there to be done? You should train thus: 'Our mental conduct (manosamācāra) shall be pure, evident, open, not riddled with flaws, and restrained; and on account of that purity of mental conduct we will neither exalt ourselves nor disparage others.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train. Now, bhikkhus, it may be that you think: 'We are endowed with moral shame (hiri) and moral dread (ottappa); our bodily conduct is pure, our verbal conduct is pure, our mental conduct is pure — this much is sufficient, this much has been done, the goal of the ascetic life (sāmaññattha) has been attained by us, there is nothing more for us to be done' — and you might rest content with just that much. I declare to you, bhikkhus, I announce to you: while you are seekers of the goal of the ascetic life, let not the goal of the ascetic life decline while there is still more to be done.
