[462] Bhikkhus, and what is there that should be done further? You should train thus: "Our verbal conduct (vacīsamācāra) shall be pure, evident, open, without flaw, and restrained; and on account of that purity of verbal conduct we shall neither exalt ourselves nor disparage others." Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train.
Now it may be, bhikkhus, that you would think: "We are endowed with shame (hiri) and fear of wrongdoing (ottappa); our bodily conduct (kāyasamācāra) is pure, our verbal conduct is pure. This much is enough; this much has been done; the goal of the ascetic life (sāmaññattha) has been attained by us; there is nothing further for us to do" — and you might rest content with just that much. I declare to you, bhikkhus, I announce to you, bhikkhus: while there is still something further to be done, let not the goal of the ascetic life decline for you who are seekers of the goal of the ascetic life.
