Mahāassapurasutta

Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 12 · Section 468

[468] Bhikkhus, and what further is to be done? [You should train thus:] "We shall be endowed with mindfulness and clear comprehension (sati-sampajañña): acting with clear comprehension in going forward and returning; acting with clear comprehension in looking ahead and looking away; acting with clear comprehension in bending and stretching; acting with clear comprehension in bearing the outer robe (saṅghāṭi), bowl, and robes; acting with clear comprehension in eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting; acting with clear comprehension in the acts of defecating and urinating; acting with clear comprehension in walking, standing, sitting, sleeping, waking, speaking, and keeping silent." Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train. It may be, bhikkhus, that this thought occurs to you: "We are endowed with moral shame and fear of wrongdoing (hiri-ottappa); our bodily conduct is purified, our verbal conduct is purified, our mental conduct is purified, our livelihood is purified; we are guarded as to the doors of the sense faculties, moderate in eating, devoted to wakefulness, and endowed with mindfulness and clear comprehension. This is enough; enough has been done; the goal of the ascetic life (sāmaññattha) has been attained by us; there is nothing further for us to be done"—and with just that much you might rest content. I declare to you, bhikkhus, I announce to you, bhikkhus: let not the goal of the ascetic life of you who seek the goal of the ascetic life fall away while there is still something further to be done.
