[487] When this was said, the brahmins and householders of Sālā (sāleyyakā brāhmaṇagahapatikā) said this to the Blessed One: "Magnificent, worthy Gotama! Magnificent, worthy Gotama! Just as, worthy Gotama, one might set upright what has been overturned, or uncover what has been concealed, or point out the path to one who is lost, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes might see forms — even so has the Dhamma been made clear in many ways by the worthy Gotama. We here go for refuge to the worthy Gotama, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May the worthy Gotama remember us as lay followers (upāsaka) who have gone for refuge for life, from this day forth."
