[522] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, here an unlearned ordinary person (puthujjana) — one who has not seen the noble ones, who is unskilled in the Dhamma of the noble ones, undisciplined in the Dhamma of the noble ones; who has not seen true persons (sappurisa), who is unskilled in the Dhamma of true persons, undisciplined in the Dhamma of true persons — does not know the dhammas that should be cultivated, does not know the dhammas that should not be cultivated, does not know the dhammas that should be associated with, does not know the dhammas that should not be associated with. Not knowing the dhammas that should be cultivated, not knowing the dhammas that should not be cultivated, not knowing the dhammas that should be associated with, not knowing the dhammas that should not be associated with, he cultivates the dhammas that should not be cultivated and does not cultivate the dhammas that should be cultivated; he associates with the dhammas that should not be associated with and does not associate with the dhammas that should be associated with. As he cultivates the dhammas that should not be cultivated and does not cultivate the dhammas that should be cultivated, as he associates with the dhammas that should not be associated with and does not associate with the dhammas that should be associated with, undesirable, unwished-for, disagreeable dhammas increase, and desirable, wished-for, agreeable dhammas diminish. Why is that? Because, bhikkhus, so it is for one who is unknowing.
"But, bhikkhus, a learned noble disciple — one who has seen the noble ones, who is skilled in the Dhamma of the noble ones, well disciplined in the Dhamma of the noble ones; who has seen true persons, who is skilled in the Dhamma of true persons, well disciplined in the Dhamma of true persons — knows the dhammas that should be cultivated, knows the dhammas that should not be cultivated, knows the dhammas that should be associated with, knows the dhammas that should not be associated with. Knowing the dhammas that should be cultivated, knowing the dhammas that should not be cultivated, knowing the dhammas that should be associated with, knowing the dhammas that should not be associated with, he does not cultivate the dhammas that should not be cultivated and cultivates the dhammas that should be cultivated; he does not associate with the dhammas that should not be associated with and associates with the dhammas that should be associated with. As he does not cultivate the dhammas that should not be cultivated and cultivates the dhammas that should be cultivated, as he does not associate with the dhammas that should not be associated with and associates with the dhammas that should be associated with, undesirable, unwished-for, disagreeable dhammas diminish, and desirable, wished-for, agreeable dhammas increase. Why is that? Because, bhikkhus, so it is for one who is knowing."
