[529] "Bhikkhus, and what is the undertaking of dhammas (dhammasamādāna) that is pleasant in the present and ripens as pleasure (sukha) in the future? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person, accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy (somanassa), abstains from the destruction of life, and on account of abstinence from the destruction of life he experiences pleasure and joy. Accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy, he abstains from taking what is not given, and on account of abstinence from taking what is not given he experiences pleasure and joy. Accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy, he abstains from sexual misconduct, and on account of abstinence from sexual misconduct he experiences pleasure and joy. Accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy, he abstains from false speech, and on account of abstinence from false speech he experiences pleasure and joy. Accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy, he abstains from divisive speech, and on account of abstinence from divisive speech he experiences pleasure and joy. Accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy, he abstains from harsh speech, and on account of abstinence from harsh speech he experiences pleasure and joy. Accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy, he abstains from idle chatter, and on account of abstinence from idle chatter he experiences pleasure and joy. Accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy, he is not covetous, and on account of non-covetousness he experiences pleasure and joy. Accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy, he is of a mind without ill will (byāpāda), and on account of non-ill will he experiences pleasure and joy. Accompanied by pleasure and accompanied by joy, he is of right view, and on account of right view he experiences pleasure and joy. With the breakup of the body, after death, he reappears in a good destination, in a heavenly world. This, bhikkhus, is called the undertaking of dhammas that is pleasant in the present and ripens as pleasure in the future.
These, bhikkhus, are the four undertakings of dhammas."
