[528] "And what, bhikkhus, is the undertaking of dhammas (dhammasamādāna) that is painful in the present but ripens as pleasure in the future? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person, even together with pain, even together with grief, abstains from the destruction of life, and on account of abstinence from the destruction of life he experiences pain and grief. Even together with pain, even together with grief, he abstains from taking what is not given, and on account of abstinence from taking what is not given he experiences pain and grief. Even together with pain, even together with grief, he abstains from misconduct in sensual pleasures, and on account of abstinence from misconduct in sensual pleasures he experiences pain and grief. Even together with pain, even together with grief, he abstains from false speech, and on account of abstinence from false speech he experiences pain and grief. Even together with pain, even together with grief, he abstains from divisive speech, and on account of abstinence from divisive speech he experiences pain and grief. Even together with pain, even together with grief, he abstains from harsh speech, and on account of abstinence from harsh speech he experiences pain and grief. Even together with pain, even together with grief, he abstains from idle chatter, and on account of abstinence from idle chatter he experiences pain and grief. Even together with pain, even together with grief, he is not given to covetousness, and on account of non-covetousness he experiences pain and grief. Even together with pain, even together with grief, he has a mind (citta) without ill will, and on account of non-ill will he experiences pain and grief. Even together with pain, even together with grief, he holds right view, and on account of right view he experiences pain and grief. With the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world. This, bhikkhus, is called the undertaking of dhammas that is painful in the present but ripens as pleasure in the future."
