[558] The Venerable Mahāmoggallāna saw Māra the Evil One (pāpimant), who had gone into his belly and entered his bowels. Having seen him, he said to Māra the Evil One: "Come out, Evil One! Come out, Evil One! Do not harass the Tathāgata, nor a disciple of the Tathāgata. Let this not be for your harm and suffering (dukkha) for a long time."
Then this occurred to Māra the Evil One: "Not knowing me, not seeing me, this ascetic says: 'Come out, Evil One! Come out, Evil One! Do not harass the Tathāgata, nor a disciple of the Tathāgata. Let this not be for your harm and suffering for a long time.' Even he who is his Teacher would not know me so quickly — how then will a disciple know me?"
Then the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to Māra the Evil One: "Even thus, Evil One, do I know you. Do not think, 'He does not know me.' You are Māra, Evil One. For to you, Evil One, this thought occurred: 'Not knowing me, not seeing me, this ascetic says: "Come out, Evil One! Come out, Evil One! Do not harass the Tathāgata, nor a disciple of the Tathāgata. Let this not be for your harm and suffering for a long time." Even he who is his Teacher would not know me so quickly — how then will this disciple know me?'"
Then this occurred to Māra the Evil One: "Knowing me indeed, seeing me, this ascetic says: 'Come out, Evil One! Come out, Evil One! Do not harass the Tathāgata, nor a disciple of the Tathāgata. Let this not be for your harm and suffering for a long time.'" Then Māra the Evil One, having come up out of the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna's mouth, stood against the door-bolt.
