[561] "Then, Wicked One, Kakusandha, the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, addressed the bhikkhus: 'Bhikkhus, the brahmins and householders have been possessed (anvāvisiṭṭhā) by Dūsī the Māra, [who instigated them]: "Come, abuse, revile, and harass the bhikkhus who are virtuous and of good character; perhaps, while being abused, reviled, provoked, and harassed by you, there may be some alteration in their minds, whereby Dūsī the Māra might find an opening." Come, bhikkhus, dwell pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with loving-kindness (mettā); likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus above, below, across, everywhere, and to all as to oneself, dwell pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness—abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill will. With a mind imbued with compassion (karuṇā) … with a mind imbued with altruistic joy (muditā) … dwell pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with equanimity (upekkhā); likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus above, below, across, everywhere, and to all as to oneself, dwell pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with equanimity—abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill will.'
Then, Wicked One, those bhikkhus, being thus exhorted, thus instructed by Kakusandha, the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, having gone to the forest, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty dwelling, dwelt pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with loving-kindness; likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus above, below, across, everywhere, and to all as to oneself, they dwelt pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness—abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill will. With a mind imbued with compassion … with a mind imbued with altruistic joy … they dwelt pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with equanimity; likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth.
