[562] "Then, Wicked One, it occurred to Māra Dūsī: 'Even acting in this way, I do not know either the coming or the going of these bhikkhus who are virtuous and of good character (kalyāṇadhammā). Suppose I were to take possession of the brahmins and householders, saying: "Come, all of you, honor, respect, esteem, and venerate the bhikkhus who are virtuous and of good character. Perhaps, while they are being honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated by you, there may be some alteration in their minds (citta), whereby Māra Dūsī might find an opening."' Then, Wicked One, Māra Dūsī took possession of those brahmins and householders, saying: 'Come, all of you, honor, respect, esteem, and venerate the bhikkhus who are virtuous and of good character. Perhaps, while they are being honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated by you, there may be some alteration in their minds, whereby Māra Dūsī might find an opening.' Then, Wicked One, those brahmins and householders, possessed by Māra Dūsī, honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated the bhikkhus who were virtuous and of good character. Now, Wicked One, those people who died at that time, for the most part, on the breaking up of the body, after death, were reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world."
