[92] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, suppose a cloth were stained and soiled with dirt, and a dyer were to dip it into one dye or another—whether blue, or yellow, or red, or crimson—it would take the dye badly and be impure in color. Why is that? Bhikkhus, because of the impurity of the cloth. In the same way, bhikkhus, when the mind (citta) is defiled, an unhappy destination is to be expected.
Bhikkhus, suppose a cloth were pure and clean, and a dyer were to dip it into one dye or another—whether blue, or yellow, or red, or crimson—it would take the dye well and be pure in color. Why is that? Bhikkhus, because of the purity of the cloth. In the same way, bhikkhus, when the mind is undefiled, a happy destination is to be expected."
