[153] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus." "Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, do you remember the five lower fetters (pañc'orambhāgiyāni saṃyojanāni) as taught by me?"
When this was said, the venerable Māluṅkyaputta said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, I remember the five lower fetters as taught by the Blessed One."
"But how, Māluṅkyaputta, do you remember the five lower fetters as taught by me?"
"Venerable sir, I remember identity view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) as a lower fetter taught by the Blessed One; I remember doubt (vicikicchā) as a lower fetter taught by the Blessed One; I remember adherence to rules and observances (sīlabbataparāmāsa) as a lower fetter taught by the Blessed One; I remember sensual desire (kāmacchanda) as a lower fetter taught by the Blessed One; I remember ill will (byāpāda) as a lower fetter taught by the Blessed One. It is thus, venerable sir, that I remember the five lower fetters as taught by the Blessed One."
