[154] "To whom indeed, Māluṅkyaputta, do you remember these five lower fetters (orambhāgiyāni saṃyojanāni) being taught by me in that way? Would not the wanderers of other sects censure you with this rebuke by the simile of the infant? For, Māluṅkyaputta, a young, tender infant lying on its back does not even have the notion 'identity' (sakkāya); how then could identity view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) arise in him? Yet the underlying tendency (anusaya) to identity view lies latent within him. For, Māluṅkyaputta, a young, tender infant lying on its back does not even have the notion 'dhammas'; how then could doubt (vicikicchā) about dhammas arise in him? Yet the underlying tendency to doubt lies latent within him. For a young, tender infant lying on its back does not even have the notion 'precepts'; how then could misapprehension of precepts and observances (sīlabbataparāmāsa) with regard to precepts arise in him? Yet the underlying tendency to misapprehension of precepts and observances lies latent within him. For, Māluṅkyaputta, a young, tender infant lying on its back does not even have the notion 'sensual pleasures'; how then could sensual desire (kāmacchanda) for sensual pleasures arise in him? Yet the underlying tendency to sensual lust (kāmarāga) lies latent within him. For, Māluṅkyaputta, a young, tender infant lying on its back does not even have the notion 'beings'; how then could ill will (byāpāda) towards beings arise in him? Yet the underlying tendency to ill will lies latent within him. Would not the wanderers of other sects, Māluṅkyaputta, censure you with this rebuke by the simile of the infant?"
When this was said, the Venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: "This is the time, Blessed One; this is the time, Sublime One, for the Blessed One to teach the five lower fetters. Having heard it from the Blessed One, the bhikkhus will remember it."
"Then listen, Ānanda, and attend well; I shall speak."
"Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One.
