[161] When this was said, the venerable Bhaddāli said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, I am not able to eat food at a single sitting (ekāsanabhojana); for if I were to eat food at a single sitting, venerable sir, there might be remorse (kukkucca), there might be regret (vippaṭisāra)."
"Then, Bhaddāli, wherever you have been invited, having eaten one portion there, you may bring back one portion and eat that as well; eating in this way too, Bhaddāli, you will sustain yourself."
"Venerable sir, I am not able to eat even in that way; for if I were to eat even in that way, venerable sir, there might be remorse, there might be regret."
Then, while the training rule (sikkhāpada) was being laid down by the Blessed One, while the Saṅgha of bhikkhus was undertaking the training, the venerable Bhaddāli declared his unwillingness. Then for that entire three months the venerable Bhaddāli did not present himself face to face with the Blessed One, as is the case with one who does not fulfil the training in the Teacher's dispensation.
