[188] Then Brahmā Sahampati, knowing with his own mind the reflection in the Blessed One's mind, just as a strong man might extend his bent arm or bend his extended arm, vanished from the Brahmā world and appeared before the Blessed One. Then Brahmā Sahampati, having arranged his upper robe over one shoulder and raised his joined palms in reverence toward the Blessed One, said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may the Blessed One delight in the Saṅgha of bhikkhus; venerable sir, may the Blessed One welcome the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Venerable sir, just as the Blessed One assisted the Saṅgha of bhikkhus in the past, so may the Blessed One assist the Saṅgha of bhikkhus now. There are here, venerable sir, bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya); if they do not get to see the Blessed One, there may be change in them, there may be alteration. Just as, venerable sir, for young seedlings that do not get water there may be change, there may be alteration, so too, venerable sir, there are here bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline; if they do not get to see the Blessed One, there may be change in them, there may be alteration. Just as, venerable sir, for a young calf that does not see its mother there may be change, there may be alteration, so too, venerable sir, there are here bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline; if they do not see the Blessed One, there may be change in them, there may be alteration. Venerable sir, may the Blessed One delight in the Saṅgha of bhikkhus; venerable sir, may the Blessed One welcome the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Venerable sir, just as the Blessed One assisted the Saṅgha of bhikkhus in the past, so may the Blessed One assist the Saṅgha of bhikkhus now."
The Sakyans of Cātumā and Brahmā Sahampati were able to restore the Blessed One's confidence by means of the simile of the seedlings and the simile of the young calf.
