[187] Now at that time, the Sakyans of Cātumā (Cātumeyyakā Sakyā) were assembled in the meeting hall on some business. The Sakyans of Cātumā saw those bhikkhus coming from afar; having seen them, they approached those bhikkhus and, having approached, said to them: "Well now, where are you venerable ones going?"
"Friends, the Saṅgha of bhikkhus has been dismissed by the Blessed One."
"Then, venerable ones, sit down for a moment; perhaps we may be able to restore the Blessed One's confidence."
"Yes, friends," those bhikkhus replied to the Sakyans of Cātumā. Then the Sakyans of Cātumā approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Sakyans of Cātumā said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may the Blessed One delight in the Saṅgha of bhikkhus; venerable sir, may the Blessed One welcome the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Venerable sir, just as the Blessed One assisted the Saṅgha of bhikkhus in the past, even so may the Blessed One assist the Saṅgha of bhikkhus now. Venerable sir, there are here bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya). If they do not get to see the Blessed One, there may be alteration in them, there may be change. Just as, venerable sir, when young seedlings do not get water, there may be alteration in them, there may be change—even so, venerable sir, there are here bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline. If they do not get to see the Blessed One, there may be alteration in them, there may be change. Just as, venerable sir, when a young calf does not see its mother, there may be alteration in it, there may be change—even so, venerable sir, there are here bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline. If they do not see the Blessed One, there may be alteration in them, there may be change. Venerable sir, may the Blessed One delight in the Saṅgha of bhikkhus; venerable sir, may the Blessed One welcome the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Venerable sir, just as the Blessed One assisted the Saṅgha of bhikkhus in the past, even so may the Blessed One assist the Saṅgha of bhikkhus now."
