[223] Then the Blessed One, wandering by stages on tour among the Kāsis, arrived at a market town of the Kāsis named Kīṭāgiri. There the Blessed One dwelt at Kīṭāgiri, a market town of the Kāsis. Now at that time the bhikkhus known as Assaji and Punabbasuka were residents at Kīṭāgiri. Then several bhikkhus approached the bhikkhus of Assaji and Punabbasuka, and having approached, they said to the bhikkhus of Assaji and Punabbasuka: "Friends, the Blessed One eats abstaining from eating at night, and so does the Saṅgha of bhikkhus; and eating abstaining from eating at night, friends, they perceive little affliction, little illness, lightness, strength, and a comfortable abiding. Come, friends, you too eat abstaining from eating at night; eating abstaining from eating at night, friends, you too will perceive little affliction, little illness, lightness, strength, and a comfortable abiding."
When this was said, the bhikkhus of Assaji and Punabbasuka said to those bhikkhus: "Friends, we eat in the evening, in the morning, and by day outside the proper time; and eating in the evening, in the morning, and by day outside the proper time, we perceive little affliction, little illness, lightness, strength, and a comfortable abiding. Why should we abandon what is visible here and now (sandiṭṭhika) and run after what takes time (kālika)? We shall eat in the evening, in the morning, and by day outside the proper time."
