[235] "Bhikkhus, and what is the individual who is freed by faith (saddhāvimutta)? Here, bhikkhus, a certain individual does not dwell having contacted with the body those peaceful liberations (vimokkhā) that are formless, transcending forms; yet, having seen with wisdom, some of his taints (āsava) are destroyed, and his faith in the Tathāgata is settled, rooted, and established. This individual, bhikkhus, is called one freed by faith. Of this bhikkhu too, bhikkhus, I say that there is work to be done with diligence (appamāda). For what reason? [Thinking:] 'Perhaps this venerable one, resorting to suitable lodgings, associating with good friends (kalyāṇamitta), balancing his faculties (indriya), might realize for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, that unsurpassed consummation of the holy life for the sake of which clansmen rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness, and having entered upon it might dwell therein.' Seeing this fruit of diligence for this bhikkhu, bhikkhus, I say that there is work to be done with diligence."
