[237] "And what, bhikkhus, is the individual who is a follower by faith (saddhānusārī)? Here, bhikkhus, a certain individual does not dwell having contacted with the body those peaceful liberations (vimokkha) that are formless, transcending forms; yet, having seen with wisdom, some of his taints (āsava) are destroyed; and he has mere faith in the Tathāgata, mere affection; and moreover these qualities are found in him, namely: the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy (vīriya), the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration (samādhi), the faculty of wisdom. This individual, bhikkhus, is called a follower by faith. For this bhikkhu too, I say, there is work to be done with diligence. Why is that? [With the thought:] 'Perhaps this venerable one, resorting to suitable lodgings, associating with good friends, harmonizing his faculties, might realize for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, that unsurpassed culmination of the holy life for the sake of which clansmen rightly go forth from the home life into homelessness, and having entered upon it, might dwell therein.' Seeing this fruit of diligence for this bhikkhu, I say there is work to be done with diligence."
