[239] "Bhikkhus, there is an exposition (veyyākaraṇa) in four statements, of which, when it has been recited, a wise person would in no long time understand the meaning by wisdom. I shall recite it to you, bhikkhus; you will come to understand it from me."
"Venerable sir, who are we, and who are those who understand the Dhamma?"
"Bhikkhus, even with a teacher who gives weight to material things (āmisa), who is an heir to material things, who dwells associated with material things, this kind of haggling would not apply to him: 'If it were thus for us, then we would do it; if it were not thus for us, we would not do it.' What then, bhikkhus, of the Tathāgata, who dwells entirely dissociated from material things? Bhikkhus, for a faithful disciple who conducts himself having plunged into the Teacher's dispensation, this is in accordance with the Dhamma (anudhamma): 'The Blessed One is the Teacher; I am a disciple. The Blessed One knows; I do not know.' Bhikkhus, for a faithful disciple who conducts himself having plunged into the Teacher's dispensation, the Teacher's dispensation is conducive to growth and full of nourishment. Bhikkhus, for a faithful disciple who conducts himself having plunged into the Teacher's dispensation, this is in accordance with the Dhamma: 'Willingly, let skin, sinews, and bones wither away in my body; let flesh and blood wither away: so long as that which can be attained by human strength, by human energy, by human striving has not been attained, there shall be no relaxing of energy.' Bhikkhus, for a faithful disciple who conducts himself having plunged into the Teacher's dispensation, one of two fruits is to be expected: final knowledge (aññā) in this very life, or, if there is a residue of clinging (upādisesa), non-returning."
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Elated, those bhikkhus rejoiced in the words of the Blessed One.
The Kīṭāgiri Sutta, the tenth, is finished.
