[240] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Vesālī, in the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Now at that time the wanderer Vacchagotta was residing in the wanderers' park called Ekapuṇḍarīka. Then, in the morning, the Blessed One dressed, and taking bowl and robe, entered Vesālī for alms. Then it occurred to the Blessed One: "It is still too early to walk for alms in Vesālī. Suppose I were to approach the wanderer Vacchagotta at the Ekapuṇḍarīka wanderers' park." Then the Blessed One approached the wanderer Vacchagotta at the Ekapuṇḍarīka wanderers' park. The wanderer Vacchagotta saw the Blessed One coming from afar, and having seen him, he said to the Blessed One: "Let the Blessed One come, venerable sir! Welcome to the Blessed One, venerable sir! It has been long indeed, venerable sir, since the Blessed One made this occasion, that is, for coming here. May the Blessed One be seated, venerable sir; this seat has been prepared." The Blessed One sat down on the prepared seat, and the wanderer Vacchagotta, taking a certain low seat, sat down to one side.
