[267] Then the Venerable Vacchagotta, having delighted in and rejoiced at the Blessed One's words, rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, and, keeping him on his right, departed. Then the Venerable Vacchagotta, dwelling alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute, before long realized for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, that unsurpassed consummation of the holy life (brahmacariya) for the sake of which sons of good family rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness; and having entered upon it, he dwelt therein. He directly knew: "Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done; there is no more of this state of being." And the Venerable Vacchagotta became one among the arahants.
