[278] With the divine ear element, purified and surpassing the human, the Blessed One heard this conversation of the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan with the wanderer Māgaṇḍiya. Then in the evening, the Blessed One, having emerged from seclusion, went to the fire chamber of the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan; having approached, he sat down on the grass mat that had been prepared. Then the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and cordial talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. As the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan sat to one side, the Blessed One said this to him: "Bhāradvāja, did you have some conversation with the wanderer Māgaṇḍiya concerning this very grass mat?" When this was said, the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan, stirred with alarm, his hair standing on end, said this to the Blessed One: "It was this very matter that we wished to tell the worthy Gotama, but the worthy Gotama has declared it before it was declared." But this conversation between the Blessed One and the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan was left unfinished. Then the wanderer Māgaṇḍiya, while walking and wandering about for exercise, came to the fire chamber of the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan, to where the Blessed One was; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and cordial talk was concluded, he sat down to one side.
